How much detail can you get in a laser cut custom steel gobo?

The question comes up sometimes about how small, or how much detail you can get with a steel gobo before you need to go with a glass gobo. It is not a fact that that you can get more detail in a glass gobo, although some glass gobo manufacturers would like you to believe this, and have you spend the additional money on a glass gobo. I think the pictures speak for themselves. A glass gobo is a great choice is you do not want the break lines in the letters that you get in steel gobos, or if you need the image to be multi colored, but smaller better detail than steel, not so much.

GoboMan was recently asked to create some Gobos with words, and images most would consider very objectionable, they were to be part of what was to be a projected art project. The question I ask is, who has the right to decide what is objectionable art, or words, and what should, or should not be created in a art form. Who has the right to censor art by position or other, and what some people think is art, and where does that end? If you owned the only printing press in town, is it up to you to decide what can be printed? Just a crude example, as this has not come up before.

This is a common question. Remember that each Gobo projector takes it’s own unique gobo size, and there is no real standard gobo size, even though some gobo sizes are more common than others.

If you do not know what size gobo you need, try to see if you can find it listed in the owners manual, or on the manufacturers website. The two sizes you will need are, the OD (outside diameter) and the IA (image area). For example, a B size gobo is has a 86mm OD, and a 60mm IA.
